Japan signals currency intervention as yen nears 160 per dollar

Japanese authorities stepped up warnings on Monday as the yen weakened toward the key level of 160 against the US dollar, raising the likelihood of direct market intervention. Atsushi Mimura, Japan’s top currency official, said the government is prepared to act if exchange rate volatility continues, as the USD JPY pair traded near 159.60 during European hours, its highest level since mid 2024.

The approach to 160 has heightened concern in Tokyo because the same threshold triggered intervention two years ago. Officials view the level as a psychological and strategic boundary, where sharp depreciation risks destabilizing the domestic economy.

Mimura’s remarks went further than usual by directly linking currency volatility to oil market movements. Rising crude prices, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East, are increasing pressure on the yen. Japan relies heavily on imported energy, and higher oil costs amplify the impact of currency depreciation on inflation and trade balances.

The warnings follow a series of increasingly firm statements from policymakers. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said last week that authorities are monitoring currency movements with extremely high vigilance and stand ready to take all possible measures at any time. Earlier in March, she told parliament that bold action could be taken if necessary, language widely interpreted as signaling readiness to intervene.

Several structural factors continue to weigh on the yen. Interest rate differentials between the United States and Japan remain wide, supporting demand for the dollar. At the same time, safe haven flows into the dollar have strengthened its position amid global uncertainty. Japan imports around 90 percent of its oil, making the currency particularly sensitive to rising energy prices.

Market participants increasingly view the 160 level as a trigger point. The Japan Times reported that investors expect intervention if the threshold is breached. Japan last entered the market in 2024 when the yen fell past the same level, deploying large foreign exchange reserves to stabilize the currency.

However, analysts remain divided on the effectiveness of unilateral action. Economists at ING said intervention risk is rising but warned that action without coordination from G7 partners may provide only short term relief. Repeated verbal warnings have also reduced their impact, raising questions about credibility unless followed by concrete measures.

For now, the trajectory of the yen will depend on broader market forces, including the strength of the dollar and whether oil prices ease. Until then, traders remain focused on the 160 threshold as a potential turning point for policy action.
