Israel deploys Iron Beam laser system to UAE amid Iran attacks
Israel has deployed its laser-based air defense system to the United Arab Emirates to help counter sustained missile and drone attacks launched by Iran, marking a significant escalation in regional military cooperation. The move underscores deepening security ties between Israel and Gulf partners following the Abraham Accords.
The system, known as Iron Beam, is a 100-kilowatt laser developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. It is designed to intercept short-range rockets and drones at a cost of just a few dollars per shot, offering a cheaper alternative to traditional missile defense systems. The technology became operational in late 2025 and saw its first confirmed combat use earlier this year against projectiles launched from Lebanon. Alongside the laser, Israel also deployed a drone detection system capable of identifying aerial threats at distances of up to 20 kilometers.
The deployment includes additional defensive assets such as the Iron Dome and the presence of Israeli military personnel. This marks the first time the Iron Dome system has been sent to a country other than the United States. Officials indicated that dozens of troops were dispatched to support operations and integration of the systems on the ground.
The reinforcement follows a sharp escalation in hostilities. Since late February, Iran has launched more than 550 ballistic and cruise missiles and over 2,200 drones toward the UAE, according to Emirati defense authorities. Israeli systems have intercepted multiple incoming threats since their deployment, reducing the impact of the attacks.
The decision to deploy advanced defense systems came after high-level coordination between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Regional officials view the move as a clear signal of strengthening military alignment and shared security interests in the face of ongoing conflict.
In response to rising tensions, the UAE has imposed a travel ban on its citizens traveling to Iran, Lebanon, and Iraq, citing the deteriorating security environment. Authorities have also urged nationals currently in those countries to return immediately, reflecting concerns over continued instability despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The deployment of Iron Beam highlights the growing role of directed-energy weapons in modern warfare and signals a shift toward cost-effective, scalable defense solutions in regions facing sustained aerial threats.
