Iran threatens to target strategic infrastructure after Trump ultimatum

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply after Donald Trump issued a stark ultimatum to Iran, demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours or face severe consequences.

The strategic maritime corridor, vital for global oil shipments, has become a focal point of the crisis. In a strongly worded statement, Trump warned that the United States could target and destroy Iran’s major power infrastructure if access to the strait is not fully restored.

Tehran responded immediately, signaling that any US military action would trigger retaliation across the region. Iranian officials stated that key infrastructure — including energy facilities, information technology systems, and desalination plants — could become targets in a broader confrontation.

The escalation comes amid an intensifying conflict involving Israel, where recent strikes have marked a shift toward more sensitive and strategic sites. Iran claimed responsibility for a strike near Dimona Nuclear Research Center, presenting it as a response to what it described as an earlier attack on its nuclear facilities in Natanz Nuclear Facility.

Israeli authorities reported no confirmed damage to the nuclear research center, while the International Atomic Energy Agency indicated that no abnormal radiation levels had been detected following the incident. Similarly, Iranian officials maintained that no radioactive leaks occurred at Natanz despite previous strikes.

Amid growing fears of a wider regional conflict, Rafael Grossi called for maximum restraint, warning of the serious risks associated with targeting nuclear-related infrastructure.

As the confrontation enters a new phase, global attention is focused on whether diplomatic channels can de-escalate the situation or if the region is heading toward a broader and more dangerous conflict.
