Investigation launched after building collapse in Fez during family celebration

Judicial authorities in Fez have opened an investigation to determine the causes and circumstances of the tragic collapse of two adjacent buildings on Tuesday night in the Al Massira neighborhood, located in the Bensouda area. The announcement was made by the public prosecutor at the city’s Court of First Instance.

According to officials, one of the buildings was unoccupied at the time of the collapse, which occurred around 11:20 p.m. However, the second building was hosting a baptism celebration, significantly increasing the number of people present inside.

A provisional toll indicates that 22 people lost their lives, including women and children, while 16 others were injured with varying degrees of severity. Emergency teams continued to remove debris and assist victims throughout the night.

Following the incident, the public prosecutor ordered the judicial police to open a formal inquiry. The investigation aims to clarify the structural, administrative, or human factors that may have led to the collapse.

Authorities have emphasized their determination to uncover the truth and establish the full responsibility behind this devastating event.
