Independent Left-Wing candidate Catherine Connolly wins Irish Presidential election
Independent left-wing politician Catherine Connolly has been elected the 10th President of Ireland after securing a landslide victory in Saturday’s election.
Official results showed Connolly winning 63% of first-preference votes, far ahead of her rival Heather Humphreys of the center-right Fine Gael party, who received 29% once spoiled ballots were excluded. The presidency in Ireland is a largely ceremonial position, but Connolly’s win reflects strong voter support for her progressive platform and independent stance.
Connolly, 68, a fluent Irish speaker from Galway, pledged to serve as “a voice for all the people of Ireland” and to uphold the nation’s tradition of peace and neutrality. Speaking from Dublin Castle after her victory, she said:
“I would be an inclusive president for all of you, and I regard it as an absolute honour.”
Before entering politics, Connolly worked as a barrister and has served as a member of parliament since 2016. Known for her principled positions, she has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza and has warned against the European Union’s increasing militarization following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Her victory marks a turning point in Irish politics, highlighting the growing appeal of independent and progressive voices amid shifting European dynamics.
