Hyundai recalls 68,500 vehicles after fatal incident linked to power seats
Hyundai Motor North America has announced the recall of approximately 68,500 vehicles and the suspension of sales for certain versions of its flagship SUV, the Palisade, following a fatal incident involving a child.
The decision comes after a reported accident in the United States in which a young child died after becoming trapped by a power-operated seat. According to the company, the issue affects the electrically adjustable seats in the second and third rows of the vehicle. In specific situations, the system may fail to properly detect the presence of an occupant or object before moving.
This malfunction raises particular concern because the Palisade is designed as a family-oriented vehicle, frequently used to transport children. The inability of the seat system to recognize obstacles could lead to dangerous situations if not addressed.
The recall impacts vehicles in the United States and Canada, specifically high-end versions equipped with advanced seating systems. Hyundai has stated that it is working closely with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to manage the recall process and ensure customer safety.
As an immediate measure, the automaker is preparing a remote software update expected to be released by the end of March 2026. While this update is intended to improve detection capabilities and system responsiveness, a more comprehensive technical solution is still under development.
In the meantime, Hyundai is advising customers to exercise caution when using power seats, ensuring that no passengers, especially children, or objects are in the seat’s path before activation. The company has also pledged to cover all repair costs once a final solution is available and may provide temporary replacement vehicles if needed.
