Cristiano Ronaldo Declares Himself the Greatest Player in Football History
Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has once again asserted his place among the sport’s all-time greats, describing himself as the most complete player in football history and insisting that his record speaks for itself, regardless of whether he reaches the milestone of 1,000 career goals.
In an interview with CNN’s Portuguese-language service, the Al Nassr forward acknowledged that football fans may prefer other legendary players, including Lionel Messi, Pelé and Diego Maradona. He said he respected those personal preferences but rejected the suggestion that he was not a complete footballer.
Ronaldo argued that his achievements across different clubs and international competitions provide the strongest evidence for his standing in the game. Rather than relying solely on opinions or comparisons with other icons, he pointed to his goalscoring record and sustained performances over a career spanning more than two decades.
The former Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus player also addressed speculation surrounding his pursuit of 1,000 career goals. He said the milestone should come naturally and maintained that reaching 920, 925 or 930 goals would not change his view of his own legacy.
According to the figures cited in the report, Ronaldo needs 20 more goals to become the first player to reach 1,000 goals across club and international football. The Portuguese forward has continued his career with Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr, adding another chapter to a journey that has included major European leagues and numerous individual and team honours.
Ronaldo also insisted that he would have no regrets if he retired immediately, stressing that his place in football history had already been established. His comments reflect the confidence that has characterised much of his career, while the debate over the greatest player of all time remains shaped by different generations, playing styles and individual interpretations of sporting excellence.
Although Ronaldo’s goalscoring achievements and longevity are central to his case, comparisons with Messi, Pelé and Maradona remain subjective. Each player made a distinct contribution to football, ensuring that discussions about the sport’s greatest figures are likely to continue well beyond the end of their playing careers.
