Poland Arrests Suspect Over Alleged Assassination Plot Against Donald Tusk
Polish authorities have arrested a man suspected of involvement in an alleged plot targeting Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, prompting a security response involving police and several national security agencies.
Tusk announced the arrest on Sunday, October 11, saying on X that the individual who had threatened to carry out an attack was in custody. He also thanked police for their swift intervention. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński separately confirmed the arrest.
The announcement followed the disclosure of intelligence concerning a possible assassination attempt against the two senior government officials, raising fresh concerns among Polish authorities about threats to public officials and national security.
Intelligence report triggers security response
According to Karolina Gałecka, spokesperson for Poland’s Interior Ministry, information about the suspected plot was forwarded to the police through the State Protection Service (SOP), the body responsible for protecting senior state officials.
The report concerned both Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as deputy prime minister. In response, the interior minister and the government official coordinating special services ordered measures to address the threat.
Representatives of the police, the State Protection Service and the Internal Security Agency took part in a meeting on Sunday to discuss the case, Gałecka said.
Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the minister coordinating special services, told journalists that the authorities were treating the matter with the utmost seriousness. He also pointed to a growing volume of threatening communications received by security institutions.
Dobrzyński said officials believed there was a substantial possibility that threats in this particular case could be carried out. However, the information made public did not detail the suspect’s identity, the alleged operational plans or the evidence underpinning the investigation.
Arrest comes amid wider security concerns
The case has emerged against a backdrop of heightened security concerns in Poland, a member of both NATO and the European Union that occupies a strategically important position on the alliances’ eastern flank.
Authorities have faced a series of violent incidents in schools since the beginning of the academic year in September. Tusk addressed the broader issue earlier in the week, warning that what he described as a pervasive glorification of violence had also reached Poland. <Cite refs={["turn590334news30","turn590334search2"]}/>
The recent incidents have intensified public debate over violence, threats and the challenges facing law enforcement, although authorities have not established a connection between the school attacks and the alleged plot against the government officials.
The arrest follows an emergency security meeting convened after the initial warning was received. Reports indicate that the threat was communicated electronically to the State Protection Service before being referred to police. <Cite refs={["turn590334news29","turn590334search13"]}/>
Investigation continues as details remain limited
Despite the arrest, several important questions remain unanswered. Authorities have not publicly disclosed comprehensive details about the suspect, the precise nature of the alleged plan or whether additional individuals may be involved.
The case places renewed attention on the protection of Poland’s senior political leadership and the coordination between police, intelligence services and institutions responsible for safeguarding state officials.
For now, the arrest marks a significant development in the investigation, but the full circumstances surrounding the alleged threat remain to be established by the authorities.
