Hiroshima remembers 80 years since atomic bombing amid nuclear tensions

Japan commemorates a somber milestone

Japan marked the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on Wednesday with a solemn ceremony at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Survivors, local officials, and international dignitaries gathered to honor the victims and warn against the rising threat of nuclear conflict.

The 1945 bombing, which instantly killed tens of thousands and left 140,000 dead by the end of the year, remains a stark reminder of the devastating power of nuclear weapons. A second bomb struck Nagasaki three days later, killing 70,000 more. These attacks remain the only instances of nuclear weapons being used in war.

At the commemoration, survivors, many in their 80s and 90s, expressed a growing urgency to share their stories as the number of witnesses dwindles.

“There will be nobody left to pass on this sad and painful experience in 10 or 20 years,” said 94-year-old survivor Minoru Suzuto. “That’s why I want to share my story as much as I can.”

Rising nuclear fears

Eighty years after Hiroshima, survivors and officials warned of a deteriorating global landscape. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba highlighted the growing divisions within the international community over nuclear disarmament, stating that the “security environment is increasingly severe.”

Tensions between nuclear powers have escalated in recent months. The war in Ukraine has reignited debates on nuclear deterrence, while US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and ongoing disputes between India and Pakistan over Kashmir further destabilize the global order.

Survivors and peace advocates worry that the lessons of 1945 are fading, even as the expansion and modernization of nuclear arsenals by multiple nations heighten the risks of conflict.

“We fear the world is forgetting,” echoed many voices in Hiroshima, underscoring the importance of remembrance and the urgent need for disarmament.
