Hiring intentions in France fall by 6.5% in 2026 amid economic slowdown

Hiring intentions among companies in France are expected to decline by 6.5% in 2026 compared to the previous year, according to a recent survey published by France Travail.

The study indicates that recruitment plans have dropped to approximately 2.27 million, marking the lowest level since 2018 and a significant decrease from the peak recorded in 2023. The decline affects nearly all sectors and a broad range of professions, reflecting a more cautious economic outlook.

The construction sector has been particularly impacted, with a sharp reduction in hiring plans, followed by business services. Analysts suggest that economic uncertainty and slower growth may be prompting companies to delay or scale back recruitment efforts.

Temporary increases in activity remain the leading reason for hiring, accounting for more than 40% of recruitment projects. Replacing permanent staff departures, such as retirements, represents the second most common motive.

The report also highlights a shift in employment patterns. The share of permanent contracts is declining, while short-term contracts are becoming more prevalent. This trend suggests that employers are prioritizing flexibility in an uncertain economic environment.

At the same time, recruitment difficulties appear to be easing slightly across most sectors, indicating a better balance between labor supply and demand. However, seasonal jobs—particularly in hospitality and agriculture—continue to represent a significant portion of hiring needs.

Overall, the findings point to a cooling labor market in France, with companies adapting their hiring strategies to evolving economic conditions.
