France begins returning military bases to Senegal
France has started the process of returning several military installations previously used by its armed forces in Senegal, according to a statement from the French Embassy in Dakar. The communiqué revealed that on Friday, March 7, 2025, the French government handed over the facilities and housing located in the Maréchal and Saint-Exupéry quarters to the Senegalese authorities. Additional sites will be returned according to a mutually agreed schedule.
This move follows a recent declaration by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who, at the end of 2024, announced plans to end all foreign military presence in Senegal by 2025. The president instructed the Minister of Armed Forces to draft a new defense and security cooperation policy that would involve the termination of foreign military deployments in Senegal.
As a result of these closures, 162 Senegalese employees working at the French installations will be laid off starting July 1, 2025.
