Flash floods in northwest China leave 15 dead and dozens missing
At least 15 people have lost their lives and 28 others remain missing after sudden flash floods struck the Yuzhong district and surrounding areas in China’s northwestern Gansu province, according to local authorities.
The torrential rains that fell between Thursday and Friday caused widespread flooding, damaging roads, power lines, and other key infrastructure. The Provincial Flood Control aGansund Drought Relief Headquarters, cited by state broadcaster CCTV, confirmed the scale of the destruction.
Major transportation routes were affected, particularly segments of Highway S104 between Xinglong Mountain and Chengguan Township, as well as the entire Xinghuang road — covering nearly 40 kilometers in total.
These road closures have severely hampered emergency relief efforts, cutting off vital access for transporting aid and rescuers into affected areas.
The provincial transportation authority has deployed over 40 pieces of heavy machinery and more than 200 rescue personnel. Search, rescue, and repair operations remain ongoing as weather conditions continue to pose challenges.
Officials are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, as more rainfall is forecast in the coming days. Emergency shelters have been opened for displaced families, and medical teams have been dispatched to assist the injured.
