Farmers claim they will meet Macron in Toulouse amid protests
French farmers mobilized on Wednesday said they expect to meet President Emmanuel Macron in Toulouse during his visit to the city, amid ongoing protests over trade and agricultural policies.
According to Jérôme Bayle, a key figure in last year’s farmers’ movement, the meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., though the Elysée Palace has not officially confirmed it. “Farmers will be received by the president,” Bayle told AFP, emphasizing the urgency of addressing concerns about falling incomes and growing competition from imports.
The Elysée said that discussions are ongoing with agricultural representatives but gave no details about the possible meeting.
Farmers have been staging demonstrations across France, demanding greater support from the government and denouncing the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, which they say threatens French agricultural production.
Macron’s potential meeting with farmers comes as tensions rise in rural areas, with unions warning of renewed nationwide protests if concrete measures are not taken to protect local producers.
