Uruguay captain José María Giménez later spoke about the incident, stating that the players were trying to defend their families. Giménez described the situation in the crowd as a "disaster" and said there was no police presence, forcing the players to take matters into their own hands.

"There was no police and we had to defend our families," Giménez told Reuters. "This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don't know how to drink."
