EU urges all parties in Sudan to allow humanitarian aid access
As Sudan continues to face one of its worst humanitarian crises in years, the European Union on Thursday called on all parties involved in the conflict to urgently allow the delivery of international aid, especially amid a severe cholera outbreak and ongoing civil war.
In a joint statement released from Brussels, the EU stressed the need for immediate and unrestricted access to humanitarian assistance across Sudan. "Civilians must be protected, and humanitarian access must be guaranteed," the statement read.
The appeal was co-signed by Japan, Canada, and the United Kingdom, reflecting growing international concern over the deteriorating situation in the East African nation.
The call comes as health workers in Darfur struggle to contain a resurgent cholera epidemic. Refugee camps in the region, particularly in the town of Tawila, are overwhelmed, with many Sudanese families waiting outside isolation centers in desperate need of treatment and supplies.
Sudan has been gripped by violent clashes between rival military factions since 2023, leaving thousands dead and millions displaced. The ongoing conflict has devastated infrastructure and limited humanitarian access, deepening the suffering of the civilian population.
International organizations have repeatedly warned of a potential famine and rising mortality if humanitarian corridors remain blocked.
