EU launches whistleblower tool for AI to promote safety and transparency
The European Commission unveiled a new whistleblower platform on Monday under the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act, designed to allow secure reporting of potential legal violations in AI development and deployment. The initiative aims to enhance transparency and safety in AI systems across the European Union.
The tool provides a confidential channel for individuals to report suspected breaches directly to the EU AI Office, the bloc’s central authority for AI regulation. Whistleblowers can submit information in any official EU language and in any format deemed relevant.
The commission emphasized that the platform uses certified encryption measures to ensure the highest levels of data protection and confidentiality. It also allows reporters to follow up and answer additional questions from the AI Office while maintaining anonymity.
By enabling early reporting of potential infractions, the tool is intended to help authorities monitor compliance and address violations promptly. This measure supports the safe and transparent adoption of AI technologies, in line with the objectives of the AI Act, which seeks to balance innovation with protection of health, safety, fundamental rights, and democratic governance.
