Egypt under pressure as Israel calls to block Gaza-bound protesters

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has called on Egypt to prevent international protesters from reaching the Gaza border, labeling the activists as "jihadists." The move comes amidst mounting global solidarity movements demanding humanitarian access to Gaza, where a devastating war has raged since October 2023.

Katz warned Egyptian authorities against allowing protesters to approach the Rafah crossing, claiming such actions could "endanger the security of IDF soldiers." His statement follows ongoing mobilization efforts by activists, medical workers, and civilians from over 35 countries who plan to march to the Gaza border on June 15 as part of the "Global March to Gaza."

A global mission for Gaza

The march aims to pressure Israel to lift its blockade on Gaza, which has left millions of Palestinians without access to basic humanitarian aid for over three months. Organizers emphasize the peaceful nature of the demonstration, clarifying that participants do not intend to cross into Gaza but rather to demand the opening of a humanitarian corridor.

The initiative has garnered support from over 150 NGOs, with participants ranging from doctors and lawyers to volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Delegations have been coordinating logistics on social media platforms, including Telegram. On June 12, protesters are set to gather in Cairo before traveling to al-Arish in northern Sinai to approach the Rafah crossing.

Egyptian restrictions and Moroccan frustration

While activists prepare for the march, reports indicate heightened security measures from Egyptian authorities. Videos circulating online show Moroccan travelers denied entry into Egypt, leading to allegations of mistreatment. Some Moroccan nationals described their experience as degrading, claiming they were treated "like criminals" despite entering as tourists.

Tensions are rising as Egypt faces criticism for allegedly obstructing solidarity movements. Meanwhile, activists insist their efforts are non-violent, with the sole aim of alleviating Gaza's humanitarian crisis.

Gaza's worsening humanitarian toll

The situation in Gaza grows increasingly dire. Over the past 24 hours, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) killed at least 120 Palestinians and injured 474 others. Many fatalities occurred near American-Israeli-run "aid" centers, which humanitarian organizations have condemned as unsafe and deceptive.

Since October 2023, the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 54,900, with over 126,600 injured. Thousands remain trapped under rubble, and countless others face starvation due to the ongoing blockade. Gaza’s medical infrastructure has been decimated, with hospitals rendered inoperable following airstrikes.

Activists hope the Global March to Gaza will amplify international calls to end the blockade and provide urgent relief to the besieged population.
