Driver who hit crowd during Liverpool parade pleads guilty
A man accused of driving his car into a crowd during Liverpool FC’s victory parade has changed his plea and admitted responsibility for the incident, bringing an abrupt end to his trial.
Paul Doyle, 54, who had previously pleaded not guilty, acknowledged all 31 charges against him during a hearing on Wednesday. He is expected to return to court on 15 December for sentencing.
The case stems from events that took place in late May, when thousands of supporters filled the streets of Liverpool to celebrate the club’s Premier League triumph. According to prosecutors, Doyle intentionally drove into the crowd, injuring dozens of people. Authorities reported that 134 individuals were hurt, including children—one of whom was only six months old.
Prosecutor Sarah Hammond explained that video footage showed Doyle becoming increasingly agitated as he waited in traffic during the festivities. Instead of remaining stopped, he reportedly accelerated into the mass of people, “forcing his way through with intent,” Hammond said.
The attack caused widespread panic in a city that had gathered to celebrate. The trial had been expected to last several weeks, but Doyle’s admission of guilt has accelerated the legal process. British media report that he is a father, a former Royal Navy serviceman, and was working in cybersecurity before his arrest.
Investigators believe the vehicle entered the parade area after following an ambulance allowed through emergency barriers. Police quickly ruled out any terrorist motive. Doyle was arrested at the scene without resistance.
