Deadly Missile Strike in Poltava: Zelenskyy Reports 41 Killed
Two Russian ballistic missiles struck an educational facility and a nearby hospital in the central Ukrainian city of Poltava, resulting in at least 41 fatalities and injuring another 180, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The attack, one of the deadliest since the war began over 900 days ago, has left many trapped under the rubble, as reported by Zelenskyy in a video posted on his Telegram channel.
The strike targeted the Military Institute of Communications, partially destroying one of its buildings. Zelenskyy confirmed that rescue efforts are underway, with many individuals already saved from the debris. Poltava, located approximately 350 kilometers southeast of Kyiv, is a strategic city on the main highway and rail route between the capital and Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, which is near the Russian border.
Zelenskyy has ordered a full and prompt investigation into the attack and pledged that Russia will "surely pay" for this act. He also called for international support, urging the delivery of air defense systems and missiles to Ukraine. "Long-range strikes that can protect us from Russian terror are needed now, not later. Every day of delay, unfortunately, means more lost lives," he emphasized.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence described the day as "terrible" for Poltava, noting that the missiles hit shortly after an air raid alert sounded, catching many people en route to bomb shelters. Rescue efforts have so far saved 25 people, with 11 retrieved from under the rubble. The rescue operation continues.
Poltava Governor Filip Pronin declared three days of mourning starting on Wednesday, describing the event as "a great tragedy for Poltava region and entire Ukraine." Pronin demanded that the enemy must answer for its crimes against humanity.
Russian military bloggers claimed the strike targeted an outdoor ceremony, while Ukrainian MP Maria Bezugla criticized Ukraine's military leadership for allowing such incidents to occur. "These tragedies keep repeating themselves. When will it stop?" she posted on Telegram.
The attack underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, with civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict. Zelenskyy's call for international support highlights the urgent need for protective measures against Russian aggression. As the war enters its 921st day, the international community is urged to take decisive action to prevent further loss of life.
