Deadly ferry disaster leaves dozens dead or missing in the Philippines
At least 18 people have died and 24 others remain missing after a passenger ferry sank overnight in the southern Philippines, according to local maritime authorities.
The vessel, carrying more than 350 passengers, was traveling between Zamboanga City on the island of Mindanao and Jolo Island in the Sulu province when it issued a distress signal shortly before dawn. The ferry reportedly went down a few kilometers off the coast of Basilan province, triggering a large-scale rescue operation.
Emergency teams managed to rescue hundreds of passengers, but local hospitals quickly became overwhelmed by the number of survivors needing medical attention. Rescue officials said rough sea conditions may have contributed to the tragedy, though the exact cause of the sinking remains under investigation.
Maritime travel is a vital mode of transportation in the Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands. However, ferry accidents are relatively common due to aging vessels, inconsistent safety enforcement, and challenging weather conditions.
Authorities stated that the ferry was not overloaded at the time of the incident, countering a frequent issue linked to past maritime disasters in the country. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with coast guard units continuing to scour the area for missing passengers.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over maritime safety in the Philippines, which has experienced several deadly ferry accidents over the past decades.
