Conference “Work, Employment and Retirement”: final report expected in September

The future of the “Work, Employment and Retirement” conference is becoming clearer, as officials confirmed that a final report will be delivered in September. This document is expected to summarize the main areas of agreement and disagreement between the participants, while also presenting an overall vision from the appointed guarantors of the process.

According to the Minister of Labour, the three independent guarantors have been granted full freedom in drawing their conclusions. Their role is to compile a structured assessment based on months of discussions between social partners, including employers’ organizations, unions, and public institutions.

Launched in December following the suspension of the previous pension reform, the conference aims to provide material that can feed future political debates, particularly ahead of the next presidential election. The discussions cover key issues such as employment transitions, job quality, career paths, workplace hardship, and retirement conditions.

Recent sessions have focused on cross-cutting themes, bringing together participants who were previously divided by topic. These include evolving forms of employment, professional mobility, inequality reduction, and the management of career endings. Special attention has also been given to gender equality within pension systems.

However, not all major stakeholders are participating. The country’s leading employers’ organization has chosen to boycott the process, highlighting ongoing tensions around the reform debate.

Additional meetings are scheduled until early July, including a dedicated workshop on retirement policies. This session is expected to further explore structural issues affecting pension systems and social fairness.

The final report, due in September, is expected to play an important role in shaping future negotiations and political positions on labour and pension reforms in France.
