Citroën revives iconic 2CV as affordable electric city car
Citroën has confirmed the return of the legendary 2CV in a fully electric version priced below €15,000, marking one of the flagship announcements within Stellantis’ broader FaSTLAne 2030 investment strategy unveiled during an investor event in Auburn Hills.
Citroën chief executive Xavier Chardon said the project aims to revive the original mission of the 2CV by making mobility accessible to a wider public. The company said the future model will be entirely electric, produced in Europe and designed as a low-cost vehicle adapted to everyday driving needs. The concept version is expected to debut at the Paris Motor Show in October before production begins in 2028.
The vehicle will reportedly be assembled at the Pomigliano d’Arco plant near Naples, a factory currently manufacturing the Fiat Panda. The new 2CV is expected to use Stellantis’ Smart Car platform already shared with the ë-C3 and the Fiat Grande Panda. Industry reports indicate the car could feature an LFP battery delivering around 263 kilometers of driving range on a single charge.
The revival forms part of Stellantis’ $70 billion FaSTLAne 2030 strategy aimed at launching more than 110 new vehicles by the end of the decade. The group plans to concentrate most investment on core brands including Jeep, Ram, Fiat and Peugeot, while regional brands such as Citroën will receive targeted funding focused on selected markets and compact mobility projects.
The plan also includes the launch of 11 new models in North America, including affordable Chrysler crossovers priced below $30,000 and a compact Ram pickup truck. Analysts expect the electric 2CV to remain focused mainly on European markets because of its low-cost positioning and compact format.
The original 2CV debuted at the Paris Motor Show in 1948 and remained in production until 1990. Nicknamed “La Deuche,” the car became one of the most recognizable vehicles in European automotive history after being developed as simple transportation for rural France. Stellantis says the electric revival will preserve the spirit of the original model while adapting it to modern urban mobility and emissions standards.
