Smart unveils concept #2 previewing next generation electric city car
Smart has revealed the first images of its Concept #2, a prototype that signals a new direction for its compact two-seater electric vehicle. The concept draws directly from the legacy of the Smart Fortwo while introducing a more assertive design language aligned with the brand’s evolving identity.
The Concept #2 maintains the small urban footprint that defined Smart’s early success, but updates its appearance with sharper lines and a stronger visual presence. The prototype features a distinctive two-tone finish combining matte white and warm gold, along with detailing influenced by fashion aesthetics. These elements reflect an effort to position the vehicle beyond basic urban mobility, targeting design-conscious consumers.
The concept was introduced during the global event “Change of Perspectives,” held on April 22 in Beijing. The unveiling precedes a broader public presentation at Auto Beijing 2026, where the brand plans to showcase its expanding lineup. Alongside the Concept #2, Smart will present the Smart #6 EHD, described as its first premium fastback sedan with an electrified hybrid powertrain, developed specifically for the Chinese market.
This dual presentation highlights Smart’s strategic shift as it moves beyond its traditional niche. The company is repositioning itself across multiple vehicle segments, combining compact electric mobility with larger and more premium offerings. This transition reflects broader changes in consumer demand and increased competition in the electric vehicle sector.
The design philosophy behind these models, described as “Love, Pure, Unexpected,” has been developed in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz Global Design teams. It emphasizes emotional appeal, simplicity, and unconventional styling choices, marking a departure from the minimalist functional approach that characterized earlier Smart models.
Through the Concept #2 and the introduction of new models, Smart aims to redefine its brand identity while maintaining its core association with urban mobility. The upcoming production version of the concept is expected to play a key role in the company’s future electric lineup.
