China launches major military drills around Taiwan
China has launched large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, intensifying tensions in the Asia-Pacific region. The drills, described by Beijing as “major,” involve coordinated operations by the navy, air force, ground troops, and missile units, including live-fire exercises in areas surrounding the island.
According to Chinese military officials, the maneuvers include the deployment of warships, fighter jets, bombers, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Live ammunition drills are reportedly taking place in maritime zones located north and southwest of Taiwan, prompting security warnings for civilian ships and aircraft.
In response, Taiwanese authorities announced the mobilization of their own armed forces, stating that rapid-response exercises had been conducted to ensure readiness. Taiwan’s government strongly criticized Beijing’s actions, accusing China of undermining regional stability and disregarding international law.
The latest escalation follows a recent approval by Washington of a large arms sale to Taipei, aimed at strengthening Taiwan’s defensive capabilities. Beijing has repeatedly condemned such deals, viewing them as interference in its internal affairs, and recently imposed sanctions on several U.S. defense companies.
China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve reunification. Military analysts note that these exercises also send a warning to foreign governments, particularly amid growing diplomatic friction between China and Japan over security commitments related to Taiwan.
