Cashless payments overtake cash transactions in Germany for the first time
Germany has reached a significant milestone in its payment landscape, as cashless transactions have surpassed cash payments for the first time. The shift marks a major change in consumer habits in a country that has traditionally been known for its strong preference for cash.
According to data released by Germany’s central bank, digital payment methods accounted for the majority of everyday transactions in 2025. Payments made by debit and credit cards, smartphones, and online platforms represented 55% of all purchases, while cash transactions fell to 45%.
The figures highlight the growing adoption of digital technologies across Europe’s largest economy. Although Germany has historically lagged behind some of its European neighbors in embracing electronic payments, recent years have seen a rapid transformation driven by technological innovation, changing consumer expectations, and the expansion of contactless payment solutions.
The trend has accelerated steadily over the past decade. Cash once dominated daily purchases, but its share has declined year after year as consumers increasingly choose faster and more convenient alternatives. The widespread use of contactless cards and mobile payment applications has played a key role in this evolution.
Debit cards remain the most commonly used non-cash payment method, reflecting their strong presence in the German banking system. Meanwhile, mobile payments continue to gain popularity, particularly among younger consumers who prefer using smartphones and digital wallets for everyday purchases. Online payment platforms have also expanded their influence as e-commerce becomes an increasingly important part of consumer spending.
Despite the historic shift, cash continues to hold an important place in German society. Many consumers still value cash for reasons such as privacy, budgeting, and financial independence. As a result, Germany remains among the European countries with relatively high levels of cash usage, even as digital payments become the dominant method of transaction.
Financial experts believe the transition toward a more digital economy will continue in the coming years. Advances in financial technology, broader acceptance of electronic payment systems, and changing consumer preferences are expected to further strengthen the role of cashless transactions across the country.
The latest figures illustrate how Germany is adapting to a rapidly evolving financial environment while balancing innovation with long-standing cultural preferences. As digital payments become increasingly integrated into daily life, the country is entering a new era in the way consumers pay for goods and services.
