Casablanca port development reinforces Morocco’s global maritime ambitions

Morocco has unveiled transformative upgrades to the Casablanca Port Complex, part of a strategic vision to bolster its international maritime stature while enhancing economic and tourism potential. The project, inaugurated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, reflects the country’s efforts to position Casablanca as a premier economic and financial hub in Africa, seamlessly connected to global markets.

A comprehensive vision for maritime growth

Minister of Equipment Nizar Baraka emphasized that the port’s restructuring aligns with HM King Mohammed VI’s vision of reinforcing Morocco’s maritime fleet and strengthening national sovereignty. The project focuses on upgrading critical sectors such as shipbuilding, repair, and fisheries, ensuring that Morocco remains competitive on the global stage.

The National Ports Agency (ANP), which oversees the initiative, aims to enhance Casablanca’s economic and tourism prominence through modernized infrastructure and expanded capacity. One of the flagship features is the renovation of the port's cruise terminal, which now accommodates up to 450,000 passengers annually.

Advancing the fishing industry

Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries Zakia Driouich highlighted the strategic importance of the project for Morocco’s fishing sector. The port now boasts a state-of-the-art fish market with 15 modern units that meet international quality standards. This development is part of a broader national network of 64 fish markets aimed at improving fish landings and supporting the local fishing industry.

Driouich noted that these investments are critical for equipping the national fleet with advanced infrastructure and tools necessary for sustainable growth in the fisheries sector.

A $557 million investment impresses observers

The MAD 5 billion ($557 million) investment in the Casablanca Port Complex has drawn praise from international figures. Former UK ambassador to Morocco, Thomas Reilly, lauded the project as a significant step in solidifying Morocco’s role as a bridge between Europe and Africa.

“These are impressive projects,” Reilly stated, pointing to Morocco’s strategic location with over 3,500 kilometers of coastline. He emphasized the importance of reliable infrastructure in supporting the Kingdom’s extraordinary economic growth.

Strengthening Morocco’s gateway role

The Casablanca Port Complex is a cornerstone of Morocco’s broader maritime strategy, which also includes other major port developments such as the EU-backed Nador West Med. Together, these initiatives highlight Morocco’s commitment to becoming a leading maritime and trade hub, linking Africa, Europe, and beyond.
