Morocco receives credentials from four newly appointed ambassadors

Morocco has received the credentials of four newly appointed ambassadors representing Palestine, Slovenia, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Malaysia, in a diplomatic ceremony held in Rabat on September 14, 2026.

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita received the diplomats as they formally presented copies of their letters of credence, marking the beginning of their official diplomatic missions in Morocco. The ceremony reflects the country’s continued engagement with a broad range of international partners across the Middle East, Europe, Africa and Asia.

The first diplomat received by Bourita was Thaer Abu Bakr, who presented copies of his credentials as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the State of Palestine to King Mohammed VI. Morocco and Palestine maintain longstanding political and diplomatic relations, with Rabat consistently expressing support for Palestinian statehood and a negotiated two-state solution.

Bourita also received Urška Klak, who presented her credentials as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Slovenia to the King. Morocco and Slovenia have sought to strengthen their bilateral relations in areas including trade, investment, tourism and political dialogue, while also maintaining cooperation within multilateral institutions.

The Moroccan foreign minister subsequently met with Luís Guilherme de Oliveira Viegas, who presented copies of his credentials as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe to Morocco. The two countries have maintained diplomatic relations and have continued to explore opportunities for greater cooperation, particularly within the framework of Morocco’s engagement with African states.

Bourita also received Eddy Erwan bin Mahmoud, who presented his credentials as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Malaysia to King Mohammed VI. Morocco and Malaysia share diplomatic ties covering political, economic and cultural cooperation, with both countries seeking to expand exchanges between their respective institutions and business communities.

The presentation of credentials is a key stage in the formal accreditation process for ambassadors. It allows newly appointed diplomatic representatives to officially begin their missions and serves as an important protocol moment in the development of relations between states.

The arrival of the four ambassadors comes as Morocco continues to broaden and deepen its diplomatic partnerships across different regions. Rabat has increasingly emphasized diversified international cooperation, combining bilateral diplomacy with engagement through regional and multilateral organizations.

The credentials ceremony also underlines the importance Morocco places on maintaining active diplomatic channels with countries representing different geographical and political spheres. Through these relations, Rabat seeks to promote political dialogue, economic cooperation and coordination on shared international issues.
