Casablanca court sentences 18 GenZ212 protesters over highway disruption
A court in Casablanca has sentenced 18 young people linked to the GenZ212 protest movement for their involvement in disrupting traffic on a major urban highway during demonstrations that took place in 2025.
The ruling was issued by the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal of Casablanca and includes sentences ranging from suspended prison terms to custodial penalties. The case stems from events that occurred during a wave of youth-led demonstrations calling for reforms in healthcare and education, as well as stronger measures to combat corruption.
According to judicial authorities, the defendants were arrested after allegedly blocking traffic on a key highway in Casablanca, causing significant disruption to road circulation. Prosecutors argued that the actions violated public order and affected the movement of vehicles in one of the country's busiest urban areas.
Defense lawyers stated that several of the convicted individuals had already completed the prison terms imposed by the court and were subsequently released. Other defendants received suspended sentences, allowing them to avoid incarceration while remaining subject to legal conditions.
The GenZ212 movement emerged as a platform for young people seeking greater social and economic opportunities. Its demonstrations attracted widespread attention across Morocco and sparked public debate on issues such as access to quality healthcare, education reform and transparency in public administration.
At the height of the movement, authorities reported numerous legal proceedings related to incidents occurring during or around the protests. While many demonstrations remained peaceful, some gatherings were accompanied by acts of vandalism and clashes that raised concerns about public safety.
The momentum of the protests gradually declined following government announcements regarding increased investment in social sectors and calls for accelerated reforms. Political observers note that the movement nevertheless highlighted the aspirations of a younger generation seeking a stronger voice in national development.
The court's decision marks another chapter in the legal aftermath of the protests and reflects the continuing debate over the balance between freedom of assembly, public order and the implementation of social reforms in Morocco.
