Building collapse in Fès: death toll rises to 22 amid construction irregularities
Tragedy struck the Moroccan city of Fès as two adjacent buildings collapsed in the Al Moustakbal neighborhood, raising the death toll to 22. Initial reports suggest that the structures, which were authorized for only two floors, were illegally extended to four stories, potentially causing the collapse.
Rescue teams, including local authorities and civil protection units, are continuing their search efforts for possible survivors trapped under the rubble. Sixteen people have been hospitalized with injuries of varying severity.
The incident occurred shortly before midnight and affected eight families. Authorities secured the area and evacuated neighboring residents as emergency operations proceeded. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause and to assess whether building code violations contributed to this disaster.
