British photographer Martin Parr dies at 73
British photographer and photojournalist Martin Parr has died at the age of 73 at his home in Bristol, his foundation announced on Sunday. Known for his distinctive and often humorous eye, Parr spent five decades documenting everyday life in the United Kingdom and the broader Western world.
From the beaches of Brighton to refined garden parties, Parr captured the quirks, habits and contradictions of modern society. His work explored themes such as mass tourism, consumer culture, leisure and luxury, always with a sharp sense of observation. He often remarked on excess and overconsumption, once saying, “We are all too wealthy and we consume far too much.”
Parr’s legacy will continue to be highlighted through major exhibitions. A large retrospective dedicated to his work is scheduled to open at the Jeu de Paume museum in Paris on January 30, 2026.
