Beijing schools introduce artificial intelligence courses

Beijing's educational institutions are set to enhance their curriculum with the introduction of a minimum of eight hours of artificial intelligence (AI) classes per academic year. This initiative, outlined in a recently released action plan by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education, aims to embed AI knowledge within the teaching framework across various educational stages.

The new AI courses can be taught independently or woven into existing subjects such as information technology. The educational strategies employed will be tailored to the respective academic levels of students. Elementary schools are expected to offer experimental courses designed to familiarize younger students with fundamental AI concepts. In contrast, middle schools will emphasize cognitive learning, enabling students to integrate AI into their everyday lives and academic pursuits. High schools, meanwhile, will focus on practical applications, aiming to foster innovation through hands-on projects centered around AI technologies.

This local initiative follows China's broader national framework announced last December, which mandates the inclusion of AI education from primary levels onward. The national strategy is progressive, starting with basic introductions at primary school, advancing through applied learning in middle school, and culminating in concrete project development at the high school level. By systematically ingraining AI education, Beijing aims to prepare students for a rapidly evolving technological landscape, equipping them with essential skills for the future.
