Behind fashion week glamour, Argentina’s textile industry faces mounting pressure

While the catwalks shine with creativity and style during Buenos Aires Fashion Week, the reality behind the scenes tells a different story for the textile and apparel industry in Argentina.

The event, widely known as BAFWEEK, remains one of the most influential fashion gatherings in Latin America, attracting designers, buyers and fashion enthusiasts from across the region. Models present collections from both established creators and emerging talents hoping to gain recognition in the competitive world of fashion.

However, the glamour displayed on the runway contrasts sharply with the economic challenges currently affecting the country’s textile sector. Industry observers say local manufacturers are facing one of the most difficult periods in decades, as a surge of extremely cheap imported clothing reshapes the domestic market.

Much of this competition comes from international fast-fashion platforms, including the Chinese online retailer Shein, which has rapidly expanded its presence in the Argentine market by offering low-cost garments and a wide variety of styles.

Economic reforms promoted by Javier Milei have accelerated these market changes. His administration has focused on opening the economy, reducing trade restrictions and encouraging competition in order to stabilize prices and stimulate economic activity.

Among the measures implemented in recent months were reductions in import tariffs on clothing and footwear, as well as more flexible regulations for cross-border online purchases. The government also increased the value threshold for duty-free courier shipments, making it easier for consumers to buy products directly from international platforms.

Supporters of these policies argue that they give consumers access to more affordable goods and greater choice in a country that has long struggled with high inflation and limited purchasing power.

Yet for domestic textile companies, the situation is far more complex. Local manufacturers say that the combination of weak internal demand and the rapid influx of inexpensive imports is placing intense pressure on production and employment. Several small and medium-sized factories have reduced operations or closed entirely in recent months.

Fashion designers participating in events such as Buenos Aires Fashion Week continue to showcase Argentina’s creative talent, but many acknowledge the growing uncertainty surrounding the industry’s future.

For some professionals in the sector, the challenge now lies in finding ways to adapt—whether through innovation, stronger branding or expanding into international markets—while navigating a rapidly changing economic environment.

Despite the difficulties, Argentina’s fashion scene remains resilient. Designers, artisans and entrepreneurs continue to play a key role in preserving the country’s textile tradition while seeking new opportunities in an increasingly globalized marketplace.
