BBC urges U.S. court to dismiss Trump’s $10 billion defamation lawsuit
The BBC has asked a U.S. court to dismiss former President Donald Trump’s $10 billion defamation lawsuit over a 2021 speech that was edited in a 2024 documentary, according to court documents. The broadcaster argues that Trump’s re-election proves the documentary did not harm his reputation.
Trump claims the publicly-funded British broadcaster defamed him by splicing together parts of his January 6, 2021, speech to suggest he instructed supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol.
The documentary, aired shortly before the 2024 presidential election, included one segment where Trump told supporters to “march on the Capitol” and another, nearly an hour later, where he said “fight like hell.”
While the BBC has apologized for the edit, its lawyers argue that the lawsuit should be thrown out, noting that Trump won re-election after the documentary aired and that it was not widely viewed in Florida, the state where the lawsuit was filed.
According to the BBC’s motion to dismiss, Trump “cannot plausibly claim that the documentary harmed his reputation” given the outcome of the election.
