Reuters investigation identifies Banksy as Bristol native Robin Gunningham
A Reuters investigation published Thursday says it has identified the anonymous street artist Banksy as Robin Gunningham, a man from Bristol who reportedly later changed his legal name to David Jones. The 3,500 word report traces a series of clues linking the artist to locations ranging from war damaged towns in Ukraine to London and Manhattan.
The investigation, written by Reuters journalists Simon James Gardner, James Pearson and Blake Morrison, draws on archival photographs, previously unseen United States police records and court documents. Among the most significant findings are what Reuters described as handwritten admissions connected to a graffiti related arrest in New York around 2000. The agency says those documents directly connect the artist to a legal identity.
Passport records obtained by Reuters also indicate that a man named David Jones traveled to Ukraine in October 2022. Banksy murals appeared in several Ukrainian locations devastated by the war during the same period, strengthening the link suggested in the report.
The association between Banksy and Robin Gunningham has circulated for years. The Daily Mail first named Gunningham as a possible identity behind the artist in 2008. In 2016, researchers at Queen Mary University of London used geographic profiling to examine 140 Banksy artworks in Bristol and London. Their analysis showed that the locations of the pieces closely matched addresses connected to Gunningham.
Reuters says its reporting adds new elements to the longstanding theory. The agency claims that Gunningham formally changed his name to David Jones around 2008 and presents documentation linking that identity to travel patterns associated with Banksy’s activity.
The investigation has renewed debate over privacy and public interest. Mark Stephens, a lawyer representing Banksy, urged media organizations not to reveal the artist’s identity, arguing that anonymity protects freedom of expression. He said anonymity allows artists and writers to address political and social issues without fear of retaliation, censorship or harassment.
Representatives of Pest Control, the organization responsible for authenticating Banksy’s artworks, declined to comment on the report.
Reuters defended its decision to publish the findings. The agency said the public has a strong interest in understanding the identity and career of a figure whose influence has extended across contemporary art, global culture and political commentary.
A separate Reuters report examined the business structures surrounding Banksy’s work. Journalists identified seven companies linked to the artist over the years and traced at least 250 million dollars in secondary market sales of Banksy artworks.
Banksy’s anonymity has long been central to both the mystique of his art and the commercial value attached to it. The latest investigation raises questions about whether that carefully maintained secrecy can survive the most detailed attempt yet to reveal the identity behind one of the world’s most famous street artists.
