Bank Al-Maghrib withdraws several banknotes from circulation

Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), Morocco’s central bank, has announced the withdrawal of several types of banknotes from circulation, effective from January 1, 2026. The decision affects bills that no longer hold legal tender status under Moroccan law.

According to a statement issued by BAM, the measure concerns older banknotes, including 10, 50, 100, and 200 dirham notes issued in 1987, 10 dirham notes from 1990, and 20 dirham notes from 1996. These bills will cease to be recognized as legal tender from the start of 2026.

The central bank encourages holders of the affected notes to exchange them at any BAM branch or authorized banking institutions. The exchange period will run until December 31, 2030, and can be done without any conditions.

This move is part of BAM’s ongoing efforts to modernize the national currency and ensure the circulation of up-to-date, secure banknotes in Morocco.
