France lowers avian influenza risk level from high to moderate

Authorities in France have decided to lower the national risk level for avian influenza from “high” to “moderate,” reflecting an improvement in the overall health situation among poultry farms and wild bird populations.

The revised classification, which comes into effect this week, marks a significant step toward easing restrictions that had been in place to prevent the spread of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus. The decision follows a sustained decline in reported cases across both domestic flocks and wildlife.

Avian influenza risk levels are typically divided into three categories—negligible, moderate, and high—depending on the likelihood of virus transmission. The previous “high” alert level had required strict measures, including the confinement of poultry and reinforced biosecurity protocols.

With the downgrade to “moderate,” some of these measures will be relaxed. This includes adjustments to monitoring procedures and fewer restrictions on the movement of birds, although preventive measures remain in place to limit potential outbreaks.

Officials stress that vigilance remains essential, as the virus continues to circulate globally. Farmers and transport operators are still required to follow safety guidelines, particularly when handling live animals, to avoid renewed outbreaks.

The move is seen as a positive development for the agricultural sector, which has faced significant economic challenges due to repeated waves of avian influenza in recent years.
