Former Israeli leaders unite to challenge Netanyahu in upcoming elections

Two former Israeli prime ministers, Naftali Bennett and opposition leader Yair Lapid, have announced a political alliance aimed at challenging incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the next national elections.

The new agreement involves merging their political forces into a single party, marking what they describe as a step toward “repairing” Israel’s political system. The announcement reflects growing efforts among opposition figures to consolidate support ahead of a highly competitive electoral race.

Both leaders previously served together in a coalition government formed in 2021, which ended the long tenure of Netanyahu’s leadership before his return to power in late 2022. Their renewed cooperation signals an attempt to recreate a broad political bloc capable of appealing to centrist and moderate voters.

According to recent opinion polls, Bennett is seen as one of the strongest potential challengers to Netanyahu, particularly in the upcoming legislative elections expected later this year. His background as a former military officer and technology entrepreneur has contributed to his public image as a pragmatic and security-focused leader.

Lapid, a former journalist turned politician, has led the Yesh Atid party since its creation in 2012 and has served multiple times as a key figure in opposition politics. His alliance with Bennett represents a strategic effort to unify fragmented opposition forces.

The two leaders are expected to present further details of their joint platform in a press conference, outlining their vision for governance, national unity, and political reform.
