At least 80 southern separatists killed in Yemen clashes, military source says
At least 80 Yemeni southern separatist fighters have been killed since Friday during an operation led by forces backed by Saudi Arabia to regain control of strategic territories in southern Yemen, a military source said on Sunday.
The clashes and air strikes targeted positions held by the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a separatist movement supported by the United Arab Emirates. According to the same source, more than 150 separatist fighters were wounded, while around 130 were captured during the fighting.
The operation reportedly began with Saudi-led air strikes on military camps after separatist forces seized large areas in the oil-rich provinces of Hadramout and Mahra in December. Most of the casualties were said to have occurred following aerial bombardments on camps located near Mukalla, the capital of Hadramout.
Yemeni authorities announced that government forces have since reasserted control over Hadramout, while officials in neighboring Mahra have reportedly realigned themselves with the Saudi-backed government. The latest escalation highlights ongoing tensions within Yemen’s fragile political landscape, where rival factions supported by different regional powers continue to compete for influence.
