Anti-immigration and anti-racist protesters clash in Glasgow
Tensions flared in Glasgow on Saturday as anti-immigration protesters confronted anti-racist counter-demonstrators, a week after a major far-right rally took place in London. The clashes occurred near the statue of Donald Dewar, father of the Scottish Parliament, where union flags and placards read “Stop the boats” and “Unite the kingdom.”
Hundreds of counter-protesters gathered along Buchanan Street and at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, carrying banners with messages such as “Bairns not bigots” and “Aye welcome refugees.” The “unity rally” was organized by local groups and trade unions after a scheduled speaker withdrew, highlighting ongoing mobilization against far-right extremism.
Police maintained a strong presence, separating the two groups as tensions rose. Despite occasional shoving, no major incidents were reported. Counter-protesters continued with speeches, music, and a carnival-like atmosphere, emphasizing solidarity and welcoming refugees.
The protests reflect broader social and political tensions in Scotland, where immigration has become a key concern for voters. Recent polling indicates Reform UK is gaining support, posing new challenges for Scottish Labour ahead of next year’s parliamentary elections.
