Anthropic removes Claude Code from $20 Pro subscription plan

Anthropic has removed access to its AI coding tool Claude Code from its $20 per month Pro subscription, according to changes observed in the company’s support documentation. The move comes without a formal announcement and reflects mounting pressure on the company’s infrastructure as demand for its services continues to surge.

Users first identified the change after updates to Anthropic’s help pages, where references to “Pro or Max” plans were replaced with mentions of the higher tier Max plan only, priced at $100 per month or more. Cached versions of the same page still showed the earlier wording, confirming the recent update. The company’s pricing comparison page now marks Claude Code as unavailable under the Pro tier, signaling a clear shift in access policy.

Despite the update, some existing Pro subscribers report that they can still use Claude Code through the web interface and command line tools. This has created uncertainty over whether the restriction applies only to new users or whether it will eventually extend to current subscribers. The lack of official clarification has added to confusion among developers who rely on the tool for daily workflows.

The change follows a series of pricing and usage adjustments introduced by Anthropic in recent weeks. Earlier in April, the company restricted Pro and Max subscribers from using their plan limits with third party tools, forcing a transition toward usage based billing. The shift reflects concerns that fixed subscription models were being stretched beyond their intended use, particularly by advanced developer tools that generate high computational demand.

Anthropic has also been adjusting its enterprise pricing structure, moving away from bundled token allocations toward pay as you go billing at contract renewals. Industry analysts note that flat rate subscriptions can effectively subsidize heavy usage, making them difficult to sustain as customer demand accelerates faster than infrastructure capacity.

The pressure on Anthropic’s systems has been visible in recent months. The company acknowledged in March that traffic for Claude services was growing faster than expected. Reports from high tier subscribers indicated that usage quotas could be exhausted within minutes under intensive workloads. A major outage in mid April disrupted access for tens of thousands of users across desktop, mobile, and API services, highlighting the strain on its platform.

For developers who depended on the Pro plan, the options now appear limited to upgrading to higher cost Max tiers or switching to API based billing. It remains unclear whether existing Pro users will retain their current access or face eventual removal of Claude Code, leaving a key question unresolved as Anthropic continues to reshape its pricing and product strategy.
