Algerian President's "Rock in Hand" Remark Sparks Online Outrage

A recent statement by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during an official Labor Day speech has ignited a storm of criticism and mockery on social media. In the viral video clip, President Tebboune is heard saying, "If you speak to me with kind words, that's fine; I'll overlook your words. But if you try to jump the queue, I have a rock in my hand, and I'll take action." His choice of words has prompted public outcry and raised questions about his professionalism and legitimacy.

Citizens and pundits took to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook to express their dismay over the president's statement, criticizing his undiplomatic language. Many deemed it unbefitting of his role and inconsistent with the decorum expected from a head of state.

One user on X noted wryly, "When we were kids, we were told that only lunatics throw rocks. Now we find even Tebboune threatens people with stones." Another commenter sarcastically suggested, "This is why Tebboune is interested in the Gara Djebilet mine—to gather rocks for his threats." Such remarks demonstrate the degree of ridicule Tebboune's comments have generated.

Prominent Algerian political analyst Oualid Kebir was forthright in his criticism, describing Tebboune's remarks on Facebook as "thuggish phrases" that tarnish Algeria's reputation and reflect a regime with mafia-like tendencies. Kebir openly questioned, "Is this the level of discourse from a head of state?" His pointed comments resonated with others who felt the president's words undermined Algeria's international standing.

The online backlash intensified as commenters scrutinized Tebboune's leadership. One person asked, "Is this how a president should address the nation, using such thuggish language? Can you see now why Morocco doesn't respond to his remarks officially?" This critique highlights the broader implications of Tebboune's rhetoric, suggesting it could harm diplomatic relations and Algeria's global image.

With the controversy showing no signs of fading, President Tebboune is under increasing pressure to clarify his remarks and restore the dignity expected of his office. It remains to be seen how he will respond to the widespread criticism and whether he can repair the damage his "rock in hand" comment has caused.
