Agadir bans oyster harvesting in Imi Ouaddar area

Moroccan authorities have announced the continued ban on the harvesting and sale of shellfish, including oysters, from the Imi Ouaddar coastal area near Agadir, until the marine environment is fully purified.

In a statement released on Monday, the State Secretariat for Maritime Fisheries said the decision follows recent analyses conducted by the National Institute for Fisheries Research (INRH). The tests revealed marine biotoxin levels exceeding authorized limits, as well as bacteriological contamination in mussels, surpassing health standards.

As a precautionary measure, consumers are strongly advised to purchase only packaged shellfish products bearing official sanitary identification labels and sold through authorized markets.

The authorities warned that shellfish sold informally or in bulk pose a serious risk to public health, as they offer no guarantee of safety or traceability.
