Train crash near Copenhagen injures 17 in major emergency response
At least 17 people were injured after two local trains collided head on Thursday morning north of Copenhagen, triggering a large scale emergency response. Authorities said four passengers were in critical condition following the crash, which occurred on a regional rail line between Hillerød and Kagerup.
Emergency services described the incident as serious but confirmed that all passengers had been evacuated from the trains. No one remained trapped inside the wreckage. Rescue teams deployed significant resources to the site, and several injured individuals were transported to hospital by helicopter due to the severity of their condition.
The collision was reported at around 6:30 a.m., according to police. The line where the accident occurred is widely used by local residents, including commuters, employees, and schoolchildren. Local officials said the disruption affected a key transport link in the region, increasing concern about the broader impact on daily travel.
Trine Egetved, mayor of Gribskov Municipality, confirmed that some of the injured required urgent medical evacuation. Authorities have not yet provided details on the cause of the collision, and an investigation is expected to examine operational and safety factors on the line.
Denmark has a strong railway safety record, but the incident highlights the risks that remain in rail transport systems. A 2019 train accident in the country left eight people dead and 16 injured, while another incident in 2025 involving a train and a farm vehicle resulted in one fatality and dozens of injuries. The latest crash is likely to renew scrutiny of rail safety measures and infrastructure oversight.
