Trump repost sparks backlash as birthright citizenship case advances

U.S. President Donald Trump has triggered renewed controversy after sharing a post on Truth Social that included inflammatory remarks about immigrants from India and China. The repost featured a text by conservative radio host Michael Savage, who used derogatory language to describe both countries and criticized immigration policies tied to birthright citizenship. The message circulated as the U.S. Supreme Court reviews the legality of an executive order aimed at ending automatic citizenship for children born on American soil.

The repost included statements attacking the protections enshrined in the 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to individuals born in the United States. The text argued that birthright citizenship enables immigration chains and alleged that immigrants from India and China dominate key sectors such as technology. It also claimed that recent immigrant groups differ from earlier waves in terms of integration, framing the issue as a structural shift in U.S. society. These assertions have been widely disputed by experts and policymakers.

The controversy comes at a critical legal moment. Trump’s executive order, signed in January 2025 at the start of his return to office, faces a decisive challenge before the Supreme Court. The case, brought by civil rights groups including the American Civil Liberties Union, questions the constitutionality of limiting birthright citizenship. Lower federal courts have already blocked the measure. During hearings on April 1, several justices, including Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Elena Kagan, raised concerns about the administration’s legal arguments. A ruling is expected by late June or early July.

The timing of the repost has intensified scrutiny of the administration’s broader immigration stance. It followed a recent interview in which Trump reiterated the claim that the United States is the only country granting birthright citizenship, a statement contradicted by data showing that more than 30 countries, including Canada and Mexico, maintain similar policies. Analysts note that such assertions continue to shape political messaging around immigration ahead of the court’s decision.

The reaction has been swift among affected communities and observers. Indian American groups and international commentators criticized the language used in the repost, describing it as harmful and divisive. Survey data from earlier this year indicate declining support for Trump among Indian American voters, with a majority expressing disapproval of his approach to India-related policies. The episode also coincides with broader declines in approval ratings, with recent polling placing overall support in the mid-30 percent range amid concerns over economic conditions, immigration policy and geopolitical tensions involving Iran.

The incident underscores the role of social media in amplifying political narratives during sensitive legal proceedings. As the Supreme Court prepares to rule on a case that could redefine the scope of U.S. citizenship, the intersection of political rhetoric and judicial review continues to shape public debate on immigration and constitutional rights.
