West Bengal voter roll purge sparks controversy ahead of election

India’s West Bengal faces mounting allegations of voter suppression after a large scale revision of electoral rolls removed millions of names just days before a key state election. The process, carried out by the Election Commission of India, eliminated more than nine million voters from official lists, representing nearly 12 percent of the state’s 76 million registered electorate. The move has intensified political tensions as voting begins this week.

Authorities state that the Special Intensive Revision aimed to remove duplicate or deceased voters while updating records. Around six million individuals were classified as absent or deceased, while another three million were referred to special tribunals and cannot vote until their cases are reviewed. With hearings unlikely to conclude before polling, a significant portion of affected voters remains effectively disenfranchised.

The revision relied in part on an artificial intelligence system designed to detect inconsistencies in voter data. However, analysts say the system failed to account for linguistic and cultural variations, particularly in the transcription of Bengali names into English. Differences in spelling across official documents led to millions being flagged. The system also identified irregularities such as parental age discrepancies and family size, criteria that critics argue reflect generational realities rather than fraud.

Opposition parties and civil society groups accuse authorities of disproportionately targeting specific communities. Muslim voters appear to be among the most affected, with data suggesting they represent a majority of those still awaiting reinstatement. Independent analysis indicates that in some constituencies, deletions heavily exceeded the proportion of Muslim residents, raising concerns about potential political bias.

The controversy unfolds against a backdrop of longstanding political rivalry in West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of manipulating the electoral process to gain an advantage in a state it has historically struggled to win. In response, government officials argue that the revision is necessary to safeguard electoral integrity and address concerns about undocumented migration along the border with Bangladesh.

Legal developments have further complicated the situation. India’s Supreme Court ruled that individuals whose cases are pending before tribunals are not eligible to vote in the current election. The decision effectively confirms that millions of voters will remain excluded during the polling period, reinforcing concerns about the fairness of the process.

Security measures have been significantly increased as authorities prepare for voting. Hundreds of polling stations have been designated as sensitive, and thousands of security personnel, including police forces and paramilitary units, have been deployed across both rural and urban areas. The scale of the deployment has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, who argue that it may create an atmosphere of intimidation.

The election takes place in a tense environment shaped by legal disputes, political accusations and public anxiety among affected voters. As ballots are cast across West Bengal and other states, the outcome is likely to be influenced not only by voter preferences but also by the integrity of the electoral process itself.
