Morocco Drives Africa's Digital Transformation Through Strategic Investments

Morocco's strategic reforms and investment-friendly policies, combined with its geographical advantage, have established the country as a leading example in Africa’s digital evolution. As the digital landscape across the continent rapidly transforms, Morocco is positioning itself as both a hub and a trend-setter, advocating for inclusive and sustainable changes throughout Africa.

This vision was highlighted during the G20 Compact with Africa's peer-learning event on digital investments, held in Rabat from December 2 to 4, 2024. The event brought together African leaders, international partners, and industry experts to exchange strategies and define actionable steps that can drive digital innovation across the continent, further solidifying Morocco's role in this transformative journey.

During the event, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Morocco’s Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, shared the country’s approach to digital transformation. She emphasized Morocco's focus on building critical infrastructure and nurturing a digital culture to ensure that no one is left behind. These efforts are designed to enhance access to information and communication technologies (ICT) across all sectors of society, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive economy.

Seghrouchni underscored that digital inclusion is not merely about technology but is a powerful force for societal change. She explained, “Closing the digital gap is crucial for improving productivity, public service quality, and fostering innovation,” adding that Morocco is ready to share its expertise to assist other African nations in their digital transformation journeys.

Robert Dölger, Germany’s Ambassador to Morocco, recognized the country’s role as a pivotal economic and digital bridge between Africa and Europe. He highlighted Morocco not only as a leader in digital progress but also as a model of cooperation between continents, reflecting its growing influence.

Morocco’s Broad Vision for Africa

Ebrahim Edries, South Africa’s Ambassador to Morocco, acknowledged Morocco's significant contributions to sustainable development across Africa, particularly in sectors such as renewable energy, automotive manufacturing, and aerospace. He suggested that Morocco could help channel private investments into vital sectors like energy, agriculture, healthcare, and education, all of which are critical to Africa’s future.

Similarly, Alexandre Guido Lopes Parola, Brazil’s Ambassador to Morocco, emphasized the need for long-term investments to promote Africa’s economic integration. He noted that digital inclusion plays a key role in addressing inequalities and enhancing competitiveness across the continent.

The importance of digital transformation was echoed by Ed Brown, Senior Director of Research and Policy at the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET). He stressed that investments in digital infrastructure are essential for creating jobs, boosting productivity, and driving economic growth in Africa. Brown called for stronger public-private partnerships to maximize these opportunities.

As Morocco continues to lead by example, the country not only pursues its own national goals but also reinforces its position as a central player in Africa's digital evolution. Through strategic investments and collaboration, Morocco is helping to shape a digitally inclusive future for the continent—one where technology acts as a key driver of empowerment and economic resilience.
