Morocco, Spain, and Germany bolster security ties ahead of 2030 World Cup

Morocco has long been a crucial ally in providing security intelligence to Spain and other international partners, effectively thwarting significant terrorism threats. This collaboration is set to deepen as Morocco intensifies its security cooperation with key European partners, notably Spain and Germany.

Abdellatif Hammouchi, the General Directorate of Morocco’s National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST), recently held a working meeting in Madrid. The meeting included Francisco Pardo Piqueras, Director General of the Spanish Police, and Dieter Romann, President of the German Bundespolizei. This gathering comes at a time when certain countries and entities are attempting to undermine Morocco's growing relationship with its European partners. Despite these challenges, leading EU countries like Spain and Germany remain committed to strengthening their cooperation with Rabat in strategic areas.

Hammouchi's visit to Spain was initiated by the Spanish National Police Directorate General to facilitate bilateral meetings. These meetings aimed to expand security cooperation and enhance the exchange of expertise. During the discussions, Spain and Morocco reviewed their partnership in areas such as counterterrorism, irregular migration, and drug trafficking. A joint statement highlighted the effectiveness of their security partnership and addressed the current security challenges both countries face.

Spain and Morocco are also focusing on expanding their cooperation as they prepare to co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Portugal. Both nations are determined to advance cooperation in technical assistance and police training to ensure the successful organization of the event. The meeting emphasized the importance of sharing experiences and best practices, particularly in the context of the 2030 World Cup.

The joint statement further stressed the significance of the meeting in enabling the police forces of the three countries to enhance their joint efforts to ensure citizen security. The discussions also covered other matters of common interest, including the fight against organized crime, human trafficking, terrorism, and various security challenges in Europe.

Morocco has been a vital partner for its international allies, including Spain, providing critical intelligence to prevent serious terrorism threats. The country has also assisted in securing prestigious events, such as the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. This ongoing collaboration underscores Morocco's commitment to global security and its role in fostering international cooperation.
