Royal Initiative for the Atlantic: A Major Step Toward Sahel Integration and Development

The initiative by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to facilitate Sahelian countries' access to the Atlantic Ocean has been widely praised by the Presidents of the Parliaments of Atlantic African States, according to the President of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami.

In a statement following the meeting of the Parliament Presidents, held at the House of Representatives' headquarters, Mr. Talbi Alami highlighted the critical role Morocco plays under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in supporting Africa’s development.

He noted that the leaders emphasized the need for an institution to support governments in implementing this project. A public declaration was made to acknowledge the significance of this Royal initiative, which was recognized as an effort that originates from Africa and is for Africa’s benefit.

Participants also expressed their approval of the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, which aligns with the Royal Atlantic Initiative. This project, which will link 13 countries, is expected to provide energy access and foster the growth of mining industries in these nations.

The event aimed to strengthen interparliamentary dialogue across the Atlantic African region, promoting the African Atlantic States Process (AASP). It sought to lay the groundwork for a parliamentary network dedicated to Atlantic Africa, fostering structured and sustainable collaboration between member states. Additionally, it focused on enhancing parliamentary coordination on shared challenges such as sustainable resource management, maritime security, investment, and regional integration. The goal is also to empower Parliaments to propose concrete solutions to help implement the commitments outlined in the AASP declarations.
