Boeing reports $11.8 billion loss in 2024 amidst strikes and safety challenges

Boeing posted a significant loss for 2024, reporting a $11.8 billion deficit after facing multiple setbacks throughout the year, including an extended labor strike, safety concerns with its commercial planes, and defense contract issues. The company incurred a $3.9 billion loss in the fourth quarter, contributing to the overall annual loss.

Fourth-quarter revenues dropped by 31%, totaling $15.2 billion, primarily due to fewer aircraft deliveries, which were reduced to about one-third of the previous year's figures. This decline was largely driven by a more than seven-week strike that disrupted production at key assembly plants in Seattle.

Additionally, Boeing's performance suffered after a major incident involving a 737 MAX operated by Alaska Airlines in January 2024. The aircraft experienced a window panel blowout mid-flight, leading to an emergency landing. This incident prompted increased scrutiny from U.S. aviation regulators, and the company slowed its production in response.

Boeing has also struggled with longstanding defense contracts, which have contributed to financial losses. However, CEO Kelly Ortberg, who took the helm in August, is optimistic about the company's recovery, stating that his team is dedicated to implementing essential changes to restore performance and rebuild trust across stakeholders.

Despite the setbacks, Boeing’s stock rose by 0.5% in early trading.
