U.S. reaffirmation of Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara: A strong message for peace and stability
The U.S. reaffirmation of Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara sends a "strong message that establishes the truth and reality on the ground," according to David Aaronson, a U.S. expert from the Heritage Foundation. This declaration further strengthens the positive momentum created by the 2020 tripartite agreement and "paves the way for regional peace and stability," he emphasized in a statement to MAP.
In a recent meeting in Washington, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated the U.S. recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara.
Aaronson highlighted that, under President Donald Trump's leadership, the U.S. recognized Morocco’s full sovereignty over its Sahara, a move followed by many other nations.
The relationship between Morocco and the U.S., under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and President Trump, is "destined for a brighter future," according to Aaronson. He pointed out that both countries share common interests and values, including a strong commitment to peace, security, and prosperity.
He also reminded that Morocco was the first country to recognize the independence of the United States in 1777 and remains the only African nation with a free trade agreement with the U.S., emphasizing that this strong relationship will undoubtedly continue to grow in all areas.
